The Writing Process by Steva Raymond

Our very first class brought about surprising results to me. We were asked as a group to visualise anything and use moulding clay to form that creation. After crafting the clay into whatever form was in our heads, we were then asked to recheck our creation and ensure that everything was just the way we envisioned it. Later, when we were sure that our creation was exact we were then asked to visit each other's desk to view their own creations and make comments. This pattern was later explained to be linked to the Writing Process. "How?", you may ask. Well, the writing process entails prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. First, prewriting was done by thinking of what we wanted to create. Then drafting was the actual creation. Revising and editing which came after was connected to going over those creations and ensuring that everything was in place and finally, publishing our work by putting it on display for everyone to see.
This, I realized, was a perfect way of introducing the writing process to students at the Primary level. It is engaging, uses manipulatives and each step can rightly be connected to each stage of the process and could give students a clearer understanding of the writing process as they went along. I believe that with this technique, my students and myself can have a very engaging time with the writing process, brainstorming, writing and publishing.
